Infected insect bite
A bite or sting that has become infected. For anyone aged 1 and over.
Most insect bites and stings are itchy and sore for a few days and heal on their own. Occasionally one becomes infected: the redness spreads, the area feels hot and increasingly painful, and it gets worse rather than better after a day or two.
Under Pharmacy First we can see anyone aged 1 and over. The pharmacist will look at the bite and judge whether it is infected. If it is not, they will advise on easing the itching and swelling. If it is, they can supply antibiotics.
Two things to know
- The consultation is free on the NHS. If the pharmacist supplies a treatment, you pay the standard NHS prescription charge for it, unless you are exempt from prescription charges.
- If this service is not suitable for you — because of your age, your symptoms, or something in your medical history — the pharmacist will not send you away empty-handed. We will signpost you to the right care provider, whether that is your GP practice, NHS 111 or urgent care.
Who this service is for
- Aged 1 or over.
- A bite or sting from an insect — such as a mosquito, wasp, bee or flea — that shows signs of infection.
- Bites from animals or people are not covered and need urgent GP or urgent care assessment.
- A tick bite with a spreading circular rash needs your GP, as this can be a sign of Lyme disease.
- If your immune system is weakened by a condition or medication, the pharmacist will discuss whether this service is right for you or refer you on.
Looking after yourself
- Wash the area with soap and water and keep it clean.
- A cold compress for ten minutes at a time eases swelling.
- Try not to scratch — it makes infection more likely.
- Antihistamine tablets or a mild steroid cream from the pharmacy can calm itching.
Get help straight away if
- Your lips, tongue, face or throat swell, or you have difficulty breathing — call 999.
- The redness spreads quickly, or red streaks run away from the bite.
- You have a high temperature, feel shivery or very unwell.
- The bite is near an eye and the eye area is swelling.
