Sinusitis
Blocked, painful sinuses that are not clearing. For anyone aged 12 and over.
Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses, the air spaces behind your cheeks, nose and forehead. It usually follows a cold and gives a blocked or runny nose, pain or pressure in the face, a reduced sense of smell and sometimes a high temperature. Most cases are caused by a virus and clear up on their own within two to three weeks.
Under Pharmacy First we can see anyone aged 12 and over. The pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and how long you have had them. In the first ten days the best treatment is usually rest, fluids and pain relief. If symptoms have gone on for longer than ten days without improving, the pharmacist may supply a steroid nasal spray, and where there are signs of a bacterial infection, antibiotics.
Two things to know
- The consultation is free on the NHS. If the pharmacist supplies a treatment, you pay the standard NHS prescription charge for it, unless you are exempt from prescription charges.
- If this service is not suitable for you — because of your age, your symptoms, or something in your medical history — the pharmacist will not send you away empty-handed. We will signpost you to the right care provider, whether that is your GP practice, NHS 111 or urgent care.
Who this service is for
- Aged 12 or over.
- Symptoms of acute sinusitis — that is, sinus symptoms that started recently rather than a long-standing problem.
- Sinusitis that has lasted more than 12 weeks, or keeps coming back, needs your GP rather than Pharmacy First.
- If you are pregnant, or your immune system is weakened by a condition or medication, the pharmacist will discuss whether this service is right for you or refer you on.
Looking after yourself
- Rest, and drink plenty of fluids.
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever, if they are suitable for you.
- Salt-water nasal rinses and steam inhalation can ease congestion.
- Avoid smoking and smoky places while you recover.
Get help straight away if
- You have swelling, redness or pain around the eye, or your vision changes.
- You have a severe headache, a stiff neck, or the front of your face is swollen.
- You feel very unwell, confused or drowsy.
